HP Elite X3 Quick Preview – Windows fights back?

The MWC event this year saw a wide range of new devices come to the fore, and while android took away the spotlight when it came to smartphones, Microsoft had a little surprise of its own. Microsoft’s ambitious Windows 10 mobile platform owns only about 1% of the global market share right now, and if anything can bring about a change in fortune, its the new HP Elite X3.
The HP Elite X3 is everything you would want in a flagship device and more, and while most would scoff at the Windows 10 mobile badge, its probably what was best for business for both the brands at this point. Coming straight to the point, the HP Elite X3 is a no nonsense 6 inch phablet running Windows 10 mobile out of the box, and derives its power from the really beastly Snapdragon 820 chipset.

The main talking point about the Elite X3 is its support for Windows Continuum. Now, for those who are new to this concept, Windows Continuum, in my opinion is the next step to the hand off concept that Apple has. Basically, if you have an HP Elite X3, and happen to also have a monitor, keyboard and mouse on hand, you can literally just dock your Elite X3 into the proprietary dock, connect the setup to the monitor, and just like that, the monitor will now run a full version of Windows 10. Connect a keyboard and mouse to the setup and you are good to go. Another nifty little accessory that HP will be offering is a laptop shell. Its basically just a blank laptop , which will run Windows 10 when you connect your device to it via the dock. There have been reports that you can even stream Windows 10 wirelessly, but I will update you on that matter once I get a solid look at how that works. Again, if you readers happen to know anything on that matter, you can let me know as well, and I’ll update the article likewise.

Coming to the rest of the features, the HP Elite X3 has got the IP67 certifications, which means that it is Water and Dust Resistant. What’s new and surprising here is that the device has also got the MIL-STD 810-grade salt, fog, humidity, transport shock and thermal shock resistance. So, if you are looking for a device that can double as superman, this would be it.

The device itself is made out of plastic, complete with a nice matte finish. On the bottom portion of the device, we have this nice patterned speaker setup. HP has gone with the B&O ( Bang and Olufsen) audio system for the Elite X3, which means the music output will be out of this world.

The display is a 6 inch type running the 2K resolution of 1440 x 2560p. Powering the whole device is the new powerful Snapdragon 820 chipset, with 4GB of on board Ram and 64 GB of expandable storage. The 4150 mAh battery should prove more than capable as well. Photography lovers are in for a treat as well, thanks to the 16 MP rear camera and the 8MP front snapper. The photo results will have to wait as the device is not out yet, but I am positive that those will be in HP’s favour as well.

All in all, the HP Elita X3 is a device that can take the fight to any existing flagship in the market, and while Windows 10 struggles to stay afloat, this device is what Microsoft is banking on for their steady revival. So in conclusion, I would say that the HP Elite X3 is definitely a piece of tech that you would want to add to your collection, and I would love it if they gave us an Android flavour of the Elite X3 as well!!
